Exploring Creativity, Marketing, and Success with Eric Elwell: Insights from a Professional Concept Artist

In our recent podcast episode, we had the pleasure of hosting Eric Elwell, a seasoned concept artist and art community savant, who has been making waves in the games industry since 2006. Eric shared his journey and expertise on creativity, marketing, and succeeding as a creative entrepreneur, offering invaluable insights for aspiring artists and entrepreneurs alike.

Who is Eric Elwell? Eric Elwell has built an impressive career as a professional concept artist, primarily within the games industry. With nearly two decades of experience, Eric has contributed to numerous projects, translating imaginative ideas into visual realities. Beyond his work in games, he has ventured into 3D printing, illustrating children’s books, and exploring plein air painting using digital platforms.

Understanding Concept Art Concept art is a unique blend of creativity and functionality, aimed at communicating ideas within a team to develop cohesive and engaging products. Eric explains, "Concept art is supposed to communicate an idea for a team to develop while also having that 'cool factor' to grab attention instantly." This dual purpose requires artists to balance personal creativity with the needs of a larger project, often leading to collaborative efforts where multiple artists contribute to the final product.

From Video Games to VR: The Evolution of Concept Art and Professional Concept Artist Eric’s expertise extends into the realm of virtual reality (VR), where he has worked on projects like Ziggy’s Cosmic Adventures and Homeworld: Vast Reaches. He highlights the unique opportunities and challenges VR presents for concept artists. "In VR, you have the opportunity to work in a three-dimensional space, which feels more natural and gestural compared to traditional 2D interfaces," Eric notes. This immersive experience can lead to more dynamic and engaging creations, pushing the boundaries of what concept art can achieve.

The Intersection of AI and Art One of the most compelling topics we discussed was the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the art world. AI's ability to quickly generate and iterate on ideas holds immense potential, but it also raises ethical and practical concerns. Eric has experimented with AI in his workflow, finding it useful for generating creative prompts and speeding up certain processes. However, he also emphasizes the importance of ethically sourced AI and its role as a tool to enhance, rather than replace, human creativity.
